Charlotte Gainsbourg is an internationally-known woman who is famous as both an acclaimed actress and a musician. With film and musical credits dating back to 1984, she has proven that it is possible to be involved in both the English and French artistic circles on a long term basis. At just 12 years old, she recorded her first song, a duet with her father Serge Gainsbourg. That same year, she made her acting debut in the film Paroles et Musique with award-winning actress Catherine Deneuve. Two years later, Gainsbourg won a Cesar Award for Most Promising Actress for her work in the movie L’effrontee, catapulting her to fame.

Gainsbourg’s debut album, Charlotte for Ever, was released in 1986, with all but one of the songs written by her father. Her English acting debut came in 1993 in The Cement Garden, a film based on the novel by Ian McEwan. One of her character’s dialogues from this movie was featured in Madonna’s 2000 release “What It Feels Like for a Girl,” bringing the film back into the public eye. Charlotte Gainsbourg demonstrated her impressive stage acting ability in the musical Oleanna, from which the title track of the film has been featured in three of her films.

Her most significant musical success came in 2006 with the introduction of her second album, 5:55. A sensation for both critics and consumers, she gained the attention of talented musician and producer Beck. Working with the benefit of his production skills, Gainsbourg later released her third and most recent album, IRM, in 2009. Charlotte Gainsbourg’s musical talent is not easily forgotten, as her music has been chosen as a Starbuck’s iTunes Pick of the Week. Perhaps the most apparent evidence of her staying power was in 2010, when one of her songs was featured in the extremely popular television series Grey’s Anatomy.

Throughout her career, Charlotte Gainsbourg has been featured in a number of films, including The Little Thief, La Petit Amour, La tentation d’Isabelle, and Anna Oz. The first memorable movie to hit the American market was Jane Eyre, which was based on the classic novel by Charlotte Bronte. Other notable films followed, including The Intruder, 21 Grams, Lemming, The City of Your Final Destination, and My Wife Is an Actress. The latter was filmed in French with her real-life partner, Yvan Attal, making this one of her most unique acting experiences.

The horror film Antichrist, released in 2009, garnered Gainsbourg impressive critical acclaim. Winning awards for Best Actress from the Cannes Film Festival and Bodil, Charlotte Gainsbourg was able to fully embrace her artistic soul in this movie. During her many years of working in the film industry, Gainsbourg has clearly demonstrated her talent for assuming a variety of intense roles, while still maintaining the professional ability to remove herself from the mindset of the characters she has played. With such a variety of different artistic gifts, it appears likely that this is one actress and musician that has many more years of contributing to her art.
